Bone reconstruction

Bone reconstruction

Today with the aid of so called guided bone regeneration, bone can be reconstructed. Specialized training makes this a safe surgical procedure with minimal discomfort and predictably good results.
Dependant upon individual anatomical considerations, modern oral surgical technique offers basically two methods for the rebuilding of lost bone:

In the first method known as the membrane technique (guided bone regeneration), the missing bone is first reconstructed.
This reconstruction is composed of a mixture of bone cement and bone shavings that are scraped from the bone in the vicinity of the wound.

Another possibility is the transplantation of a piece of bone known as a block graft. The bone can be taken, for example, from the area behind the wisdom teeth and then, placed into the required position with a titanium screw. If necessary, the bone removed in the procedure can itself be reconstructed at the same time with bone cement.
The newly transplanted bone is securely held in place after approximately four months.

As a result the jawbone regains its original form and proportion.
At this point the choice can be made between an implant or bridge for the functional and optimally aesthetic reconstruction.

1) Due to the missing tooth, bone deterioration has already set in.

2) The implant is ideally positioned, but the additional bone base is missing from one side.

3) The implant is covered with a mixture of bone shavings and material for the replacement of the bone.

4) The area is covered and stabilized with a membrane.

5) Finally, the membrane is removed and the already firmly seated implant is given a crown.
