What is Botulinumtoxin - A and how does it work?
Botulinumtoxin A (commonly called "Botox") is a naturally occurring bacterial protein. When injected into muscle tissue, it selectively blocks the nerve synapses. This prevents the corresponding muscle from being in the tensed state that it is accustomed to being in.
Other nerve functions, such as those for feeling or sensation through the skin are not affected. When the tension is released for long periods of time, for example over a period of weeks or months, a rapid smoothing of the skin results. In the area of the forehead and for crows-feet around the eyes, further treatment is usually not necessary.
Should the wrinkles already be deeply ingrained, the wrinkles may possibly need to be filled with fillers such as collagen.
